What is Software Center?
Software Center is part of Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), which allows Computing and Technology Services (CTS) to deliver, support, and manage applications, updates, and services on Duquesne-owned computers across campus.
Software Center will allow you to install a variety of licensed software and run updates on your Duquesne-owned computer without having to contact CTS for assistance.

How Do I Receive My Updates Through Software Center?

When are Microsoft updates released to University owned computers?
- Updates are released on the last Tuesday of every month
Will my computer receive updates if I am away from Campus?
- No, unless you are using VPN to access services here at campus. While off campus, you will need to leave your machine VPNed into the campus network for approximately 1 hour in order to pull updates.
Will my computer install updates if I schedule an after-hour install of updates and I shut the computer off?
- No, your computer must be on and sleep settings adjusted to not go to sleep when you schedule your after-hours install time.
If I have my computer turned off for an extended period of time (ex. laptop stored in a closet), when I turn it on will it give me the 7-day window to install updates?
- No, currently that option is not available. If you do not login to your machine within the 7-day window after updates become available, your machine will check in with the update server, recognize that it has been greater than 7 days since updates were released, and you will receive a pop-up window stating that you have three hours to install the updates.
Will I receive 3rd-party updates (Java, Firefox, Flash ...) the same way I receive my Windows updates?
- No, 3rd-party updates are installed separately from Microsoft Windows updates. 3rd-party updates are installed as follows:
- 2nd full week of every month: The deployment will occur to Tech-Partners and Core Banner Users. This will be deployed on the Tuesday maintenance schedule.
- 3rd full week of every month: The final deployment will occur to all of campus including lecterns, labs, and faculty/ staff machines.
- Installing updates and restarting your machine during your work day, lunch, or right before you leave for the day. This allows you to install your updates without having to configure your business hours or change your sleep settings.
If you do schedule updates to run during business hours, please remember the following:
- Be sure to configure your business hours per the instructions in the video above.
- Make sure your computer's sleep settings are turned off.
- If your computer is asleep when the updates are set to be installed and your computer is supposed to restart, they will not run.
How do I get my system updates?
Currently, macOS system updates are still being provided directly by Apple. To install the current security updates, please go to the Update section of the App Store.
An update from Apple will not install, and says CTS has blocked it. Why?
In the event that an update is diagnosed to be problematic or destructive, such as unsupported operating system upgrades, we will block them until Apple remedies the issue with them.
Where do I get updates for my other applications?
Third party application updates, (i.e. Office, Firefox, Chrome, Flash), are available in Self Service for manual upgrade. This catalogue will be tailored the software installed on your machine to offer you only the updates you require.
If there is a known security risk to an application installed on your computer, an update may be silently applied to your computer. Any necessary actions following this install will be presented via a popup message.
