Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

I believe learning is an active and collaborative process. My role as the teacher is to facilitate learning by creating a classroom environment that supports critical thinking, curiosity and exploration of academic content. Pedagogical practices include thoughtful discussions that question assumptions, explore scholarly evidence and critically reflect on scholarly evidence and lived experiences. A key component of my teaching pedagogy provides students with opportunities to extend their learning through experiential and service learning experiences.

Research

Research Focus: My research interests include exploring the process of developing community-university and global partnerships, the challenges of OT practice that occupational therapists face in Africa and strategies and supports to overcome these barriers; exploring the barriers to social and occupational inclusion that children, youth and adults with disabilities face, their strategies and triumphs to overcome these barriers as they move from dependency to interdependency, particularly those living in Africa.

Current Projects: One current project examines how occupational therapists develop, maintain and sustain global partnerships. I also have a series of studies examining the trials, tribulations and triumphs of occupational therapy practice in Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya respectively.

Recent Grants: Fred Sammons Family Foundation Grant: A cross-cultural study of the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of occupational therapists in 18 African countries.
