Bio

Assistant Professor Jessica Devido is an educator, researcher and clinician with a particular interest in maternal and children's health. A board certified pediatric nurse practitioner, Dr. Devido has worked as an obstetric nurse, and she is the current president of the Three Rivers Chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.

Specifically, her research interests include health promotion and disease prevention for at-risk childbearing age women and their offspring utilizing a community engaged approach. She also has specific interest in the disparity that exists in maternal and infant morbidity and mortality for African Americans, particularly in the local area as well as lactation support for at-risk mothers. Her previous work is with preconception counseling for African-American women with diabetes. As a recipient of grant funding from both the American Association of Diabetes Educators and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Dr. Devido has been principal investigator on mixed-methods research in the area of diabetes education among parish nurses. She has also been part of a research team on multiple NIH-funded research projects related to preconception counseling for women with diabetes. More recently her research partner and herself have two funded projects which includes: "Wise Women: an untapped community asset," which utilized Dr. Devido's preliminary work during her dissertation as a catalyst to explore existing networks of "Wise Women" for health-related information exchange. The second project, "A Community of Well Women, Well Babies: a vocational pipeline for African-American girls" was funded by the Rice Fellows program at Duquesne University.

Dr. Devido earned a doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing as well as certificates in health equity from the Graduate School of Public Health and in gender, sexuality and women's studies from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. In addition, she has a parish nurse certificate through the Mercy Parish Nurse and Health Ministry Program.

During her doctoral studies, she earned a number of noteworthy awards and honors, including a Jonas Salk Medical Ethics Fellowship, a Corrine Barnes Pediatric Advanced Practice Award and a Doctoral Student Outstanding Research Award. Her MSN is also from the University of Pittsburgh, where she received the Marie S. Houston Pediatric Nursing Award and graduated cum laude.
