Master of Science in Forensic Nursing (MSN)
Charge Nurse at Sunrise Canyon Hospital

Why did you select this online program?

The curriculum of the program was exactly the kind of educational experience I was seeking for forensic nursing. Additionally, the faculty and staff were extremely helpful in answering my questions and concerns. This program is also well known and was recommended by various professionals and highly recognized forensic organizations such as the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) and the American Academy of Forensic Science (AAFS).

In addition to the academic program, one of the primary deciding factors for me was the helpfulness of the advisors and staff. I had several questions related to my program of interest that were explained patiently and thoroughly by the Duquesne University faculty and staff. Within a few days of phone calls and emails, I was able to speak with advisors and the director of the MSN forensic nursing program. I can honestly say the other programs I researched did not provide the time and attention as the Duquesne University faculty and staff. For these reasons, I knew I was making the right choice.

What do you like best about the program?

I enjoy the diversity and curriculum of the program. My peers are from several backgrounds of nursing. Also, the dedication and willingness of faculty and staff to help.

As an online student with Duquesne University School of Nursing, I have never felt alone in my studies or needs. My advisor always answers my questions through emails or phone calls and I feel comforted knowing her willingness to help. Additionally, Duquesne University has several programs to ensure distance learners receive every resource available as an on-campus student. Orientation to the campus provided an opportunity to meet professors and peers, understand various online systems and see a beautiful campus. As a prior online student, I can honestly say that the orientation and support I have received from Duquesne University has truly been phenomenal.

How have you benefited from this program?

In my professional nursing career, this program has enabled me to become a better nurse. The educational experience goes beyond the classroom and into my nursing practice. I have a better understanding overall of my patients, healthcare and nursing because of this program. Overall, I am a better, more knowledgeable nurse now than I was prior to enrolling at Duquesne University.

What has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?

My biggest challenge has been taking the step from an undergraduate student to a graduate student, and realizing the differences and what is required. I have overcome this challenge by the various academic resources Duquesne University provides students to ease this transition, in addition to the faculty, staff, and advisors answering my questions.

How would you describe the professors who teach the courses?

I would describe the professors as knowledgeable, experienced and passionate. They have all been more than willing to help and genuinely encourage students to ask questions and seek assistance when needed.

Would you recommend the program to others looking to advance and what would you tell them about it?

Yes, I would definitely recommend the program to others seeking an advanced degree. Not only does Duquesne University offer an exceptional academic experience, most importantly, the support provided by faculty and staff is something not every university offers.

What do you hope to do once you've obtained your degree?

I hope to educate students, society and professionals in healthcare and law enforcement about forensic nursing. I also hope to present research at academic conferences and in the future travel to various countries to teach forensic nursing. Additionally, my goal is to develop forensic nursing organizations aimed at assisting victims of crime and violence. The possibilities are endless.

What are your thoughts on the online educational experience?

As a prior online student, I have learned that the online experience makes a person become a leader in many ways. Unlike classroom learning, the online experience allows the student to figure out what is required with assignments. Although this is difficult at times, I have grown as a nurse and am able to deal with situations and find solutions more independently. The convenience of online learning is also very beneficial considering busy work schedules and lifestyles.
