2010 Graduate Alaina Hartman Speaks to ISM Students
Alaina Hartman, BSBA, Information Systems Management & BA, Corporate Communications ’10, recently visited Dr. Kathleen Hartzel’s undergraduate and Master of Science in Information Systems Management (MS-ISM) classes to relay her experiences as an intern and now full-time employee at Highmark as a Decision Support Analyst in the data-warehousing group.
Hartman, who has also worked in the banking sector, discussed the many advantages a degree in Information Systems Management affords business students, including a stable job market, an abundance of opportunities across various industries, and the ability to use the skills learned in college immediately in the workplace. About this phenomenon Hartman said, “Many college graduates say that they only use five percent of what they learned in school. But with a degree in IS, you really leverage everything that you learned during your college experience in your career.”
Hartman and Dr. Hartzel hope that this visit is the beginning of a stronger relationship between the School of Business’ Information Systems Management department and Highmark; one that they hope will ultimately lead to more internship and job opportunities for Duquesne undergraduate ISM and MS-ISM students.
