Beard Institute Distinguished Ethics Speaker Bill O’Rourke Challenges Students to Examine Their Moral Compass

October 12, 2011

Bill O'Rourke presented "Does Your Moral Compass Point to True North?" to a group of undergraduate and graduate business students and faculty on October 6 as part of the Beard Institute's Distinguished Ethics Speaker series.  Mr. O'Rourke retired from Alcoa this year.  During his career with Alcoa, he held various positions such as Patent Attorney, Auditor, VP of Global Business Services and Chief Information Officer.  He was President of Alcoa Russia, and his latest position was VP Sustainability and Environment, Health and Safety.

O'Rourke challenged his audience to think about how they would react in situations that call for ethical decision making.  He presented examples of ethical issues and questioned the audience for solutions.

First and foremost, O'Rourke told his listeners to "gather the facts."

Mr. O'Rourke also talked about Alcoa's history in not only meeting their financial objectives, but the importance of safety.  Safety for Alcoa's workers is a top priority with Lost Workday Incidents trending downward for over two decades.   Alcoa values its employees, customers, other stakeholders and the environment.  Alcoa has been on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index since its inception 10 years ago.

O'Rourke feels that ethics and sustainability are synonymous for a successful world future.
