May 2010: Robert Sroufe, Ph.D., Participates in Sustainability Conferences
Robert Sroufe, Ph.D., Director of Applied Sustainability at The Beard Institute, recently participated in three conferences that focused on the role of sustainability in business:
On May 3-4, 2010, Dr. Sroufe participated in the Marcellus Shale Policy Conference, sponsored by Duquesne University and the Pennsylvania Environmental Conference. The conference focused on the unresolved challenges imbedded in the development of the Marcellus Shale formation.
On May 7 - 10, 2010, Dr. Sroufe presented his research at the 21st annual Production and Operations Management Society Conference "Operations in Emerging Economies." Dr. Sroufe was on a panel that presented different approaches to the integration of sustainability into production and operations management. Dr. Sourfe also discussed Duquesne University' MBA Sustainability program including project courses, extracurricular simulations/activities and student travel abroad opportunities.
On May 12 - 14, 2010, Dr. Sroufe and Pinar Geylani, Ph.D. presented their research at the second annual Alliance for Research on Corporate Sustainability (ARCS) Research Conference. Sponsored by Harvard Business School, the conference brought together academics that share a strong commitment to business and sustainability research. Dr. Sroufe presented "The Role of Motivation on Environmentally Driven Operations" at conference. This research study focused on the ways that companies can integrate infrastructure, operations and human resource management to take better advantage of environmentally sustainable activities. In addition, Dr. Pinar Geylani, Ph.D., presented "Corporate Social Responsibility and Shareholder Wealth - A Longitudinal Mixed-Models Analysis", a paper that she wrote with two other Duquesne University faculty members, Philip Baird, Ph.D. and Jeffery Robert, Ph.D. The paper examined the effect of corporate social performance on stock price by studying 1,115 companies from 1999-2008. Dr. Sroufe and Dr. Geylani presented their research to a group of 90 academics from the top business schools throughout the United States.
