Turning Waste into Profit
A team of MBA Sustainability students distinguished Duquesne and the Donahue School as among the best in the world at the "intersection of profitability and positive social and environmental impact."
Matt Ebberts, Gregg Gorse, Atalie Hayes and Andrew Minnotte claimed third place (and a $5,000 prize) at the international final of the 2013 Aspen Institute Business and Society MBA Case Competition.
Over 1,000 MBA students competed in Aspen's 2013 case competition during a weekend in March. Students from around the world accessed a comprehensive, web-based case and posted 6-8 page solutions early Monday morning. The best written proposals from the 25 participating schools were evaluated by a panel of judges, and five finalists were chosen via a blind review to present and defend their work at the final round, hosted at the Bank of New York Mellon offices in New York City.
All MBA Sustainability students participate in the Aspen competition as an extension of their signature live consulting courses taught by Professors Robert Sroufe and Diane Ramos.
"Matt, Gregg, Atalie and Andrew proposed a profitable, cradle-to-cradle solution for turning waste into new revenue while serving stakeholders and the environment," said Ramos.
"Their success at leveraging sustainability for innovation demonstrates our commitment as signatory of the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME)," added Sroufe.
