Shooting for the ideal
Jason Wirick, 2010, is director of facilities and sustainability at the world-renowned Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh.
"Phipps is at the intersection of the built and natural environments," Jason says, "and I am in the unique position where I can shoot for the ideal."
Jason was instrumental in developing the Center for Sustainable Landscapes at Phipps, a facility that operates as efficiently as a flower. This living learning building achieved LEED Platinum, four stars as a Sustainable SITES Initiative pilot project, and is pursuing the Living Building Challenge.
An active alumnus, Jason judges case competitions, speaks to classes and serves as project client. He engaged an MBA consulting team to develop the launch plan for Studio Phipps, a mission and fee based consulting group, in 2013.
After earning a B.S. in building construction from Virginia Tech, Jason worked as field engineer and project manager in the mid-Atlantic region. While earning his MBA, he examined environmental product declarations for PPG Industries, worked on employee engagement with Highmark Inc., and traveled to Ecuador, China and Japan.
We are in the pursuit of zero everything - waste, water, energy.
