Innovating at the juncture of science+design

As materials engineer, Lauren Zulli, 2010, routinely uses life cycle analysis, cradle-to-cradle chemistry and systems thinking concepts from her MBA to foster excellence in the global operations of Michigan-based Herman Miller, a furniture company.

"It sounds cheesy," Lauren says, "but I'm doing exactly what I wanted to do when I went into the program."

During her year at Duquesne, Lauren worked with PNC Bank to green their supply chain and with the Pennsylvania Environmental Council to develop an alternative model for restoring abandoned mine lands while turning waste into fuel.

Prior to pursuing an MBA, Lauren earned bachelor degrees in physics/astronomy and math at the University of Pittsburgh and started work on a Ph.D. in applied math; however, she saw few opportunities to tie theory to practice as an academic.  Her love of numbers and passion for the environment led her to the MBA Sustainability program.

The consulting projects immediately apply what you are learning.
