Xia Chao (Ph.D. Second Language Acquisition and Teaching, University of Alabama, '13) has taught elementary to college age students in the fields of English as a second/foreign language in the U.S. and China, K-12 English language learners instruction, and graduate level courses in TESOL and literacy education. Her research focuses on exploring sociocultural second language and literacy acquisition in accordance with critical applied linguistics. Her work targets the intersection of language, power, identity, class, race, and religion in multilingual and multicultural settings with emphasis on immigrant family literacy and second language teacher education.

Laura Mahalingappa (Ph.D. Linguistics, University of Texas at Austin, '09) serves as the Director of the ESL M.S. Ed., ESL Specialist Certificate, and TESOL Certificate Program. She has taught ESL/EFL in the U.S., Former Soviet Union, and Turkey, and now teaches courses supporting linguistically and culturally diverse learners. Her research on learning and teaching in marginalized communities includes grammatical and sociocultural aspects of bilingual language acquisition. Specifically teachers' beliefs about teaching linguistically and culturally diverse populations; using virtual field experiences to prepare preservice teachers to work with English learners; notions of race, ethnicity, and language in ESL teacher preparation programs; and supporting Muslim refugee students through community-based organizations.

Nihat Polat (Ph.D. Foreign Language Education and Applied linguistics, University of Texas at Austin, '07) has two research tracks. The first area concerns applied linguistics and L2 acquisition while the second one focuses on teacher education. His research has appeared in journals like Modern Language Journal, Applied Linguistics, Language Learning & Technology, Linguistics and Education, Teaching Education, Foreign Language Annals, Language Learning Journal, System, Critical Inquiry in Language Studies, International Journal of Educational Research, and Journal of Language, Identity, and Education. He is a consulting editor for the Journal of Educational Research while also serving as the Chair of TESOL Applied Linguistics Interest Section.
