1. Are there any requirements to apply to for TESOL certificate?
There are no prerequisites for the TESOL certificate program. The program is available to any student who possesses a bachelor's degree from any content area. Students must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA from undergraduate or previous graduate coursework.
2. What can I do with the TESOL Certificate?
Individuals who possess a TESOL certificate have the opportunity to teach English internationally in language learning schools and K-12 schools. They can also teach in language centers and university programs in the U.S. as well as work in ESL-related fields such as administration, adult literacy, or multicultural education.
3. How many credits is the TESOL certificate?
The TESOL specialist certificate is a total of 18 credit-hours consisting of 6, 3-credit courses.
4. How much will tuition cost throughout the program?
The cost of the program depends on whether you are taking courses part-time, full-time, or as part of a graduate program. Current tuition rates and fees.
Many full-time students (enrolled in at least 2 classes per semester) in master's programs in the School of Education receive a 25% discount on tuition, which makes our program cost-competitive with similar university TESOL Certificate programs.
5. How do I apply for the TESOL Certificate program?
To apply for the program:
a. Complete the online application for the TESOL Certificate.
b. Submit official transcripts from undergraduate and/or graduate course work (minimum of 3.0 GPA required)
c. Submit a statement of purpose - 1,000 words describing your academic and professional goals
6. Do I apply for the M.S. Ed. and TESOL Certificate separately?
If you would like to apply for both the M.S.Ed. and the TESOL Certificate, please complete the M.S.Ed. application - if you are accepted into the M.S.Ed. program, you can then be added into the TESOL Certificate Program simultaneously.
7. Do you offer evening or online courses?
All of our program courses are offered in the evenings, but we do not currently hold program classes online.
8. What are the average class sizes for this program?
The average class size for our program is around 15 students, which enables all students to receive individual attention in every course.
9. Can I teach in public schools in Pennsylvania with this certificate?
The TESOL certificate does not provide PA certified teachers with the credentials to teach ESL in K-12 public schools. That credential is the PA ESL Program Specialist Certificate, which is also offered within the ESL program at Duquesne University.
10. Are students required to enroll full time?
No, students may enroll under full time or part time status.
