I graduated in May 2013 with my BS in HMS. Throughout my time at Duquesne I had two different internships that allowed me to better understand what the field of HMS has to offer. I interned at a small community hospital in Somerset, Pa, and then at a larger system, UPMC, so that I could see both dynamics.
Upon completing my degree at Duquesne, I moved directly into a Master's Degree program at The University of Pittsburgh, where I just graduated in April 2015 with my Master in Healthcare Administration (MHA). I loved the program and recommend receiving an Master's Degree to anyone looking to further their careers in management or administration. While at Pitt, I spent a summer with UPMC in their Physician Services Division, where I met several amazing people. These administrators, along with my professors, helped me begin applying for Administrative Fellowships that would begin after graduation. I'm happy to say that I will begin my two year administrative fellowship with OhioHealth in July at their Riverside Methodist hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where I will be working in hospital operations.
My best advice is to get as much experience as possible, as well as different experiences so that you can really pinpoint what atmosphere fits you best. Always network and keep in contact with anyone you meet as they always have excellent first hand advice to offer!
