I graduated from Duquesne in 2014 with a B.S. in Health Management Systems (HMS). I am now finishing up my accelerated nursing degree, and my HMS experience has been extremely useful in my academic and professional endeavors. HMS at Duquesne gave me both the clinical and technical knowledge I needed to work in a medical setting. Whether you are interested in providing patient care or working on the administrative side, the HMS program lays a foundation of the health care industry. The in- class experience from highly qualified professors and the out-of-classroom experiences at local hospitals and health care firms allow HMS students to gain the knowledge necessary to succeed in the medical world. This major also offers many job and internship opportunities. I worked as a managed care assistant and a patient chart abstractor while studying HMS at Duquesne. I acquired my internship in Clinical Informatics from a contact I met while abstracting. This internship lead me to pursue a career in nursing informatics, and I am very well-prepared to be a clinician that works in a highly technology based setting due to my HMS experience.
As a nursing student, I have a great advantage over my fellow classmates who do not have a background in managed care, informatics, and billing and coding. I understand the "ins and outs" of the hospital much better than someone who only has clinical knowledge. I am resourceful when providing care, because I understand what hospitals, insurance, and patients pay for the supplies I use. I understand the necessity of quality assurance and improvement from my studies in HMS. The knowledge and experience I gained from my four years in the HMS program has lead me to receive a scholarship for service and a contract working as a nurse with the only Mayo Clinic affiliated facility in the Northeast part of the United States. I will begin working as an OR nurse in September, and I am currently being recruited to join an informatics team. Health Management Systems has helped me excel as a nurse, and I believe this degree sets students up to be the best in their area of healthcare practice.
