Choosing the path of Health Management Systems at Duquesne University was not a difficult decision for me. It seemed like the perfect major as it ties in clinical studies, business and management skills, along with information technology. All three of these components continue to change and evolve with each day and I am fortunate enough to be part of an organization that is experiencing this evolution as we speak.

I completed an internship through UPMC's Summer Associate program where I worked as a Human Resources intern at St. Margaret Hospital. This internship led to a part time position where I continued to work as an HR Assistant throughout my remaining time as a student at Duquesne. During my senior year at Duquesne, I partnered with UPMC's Corporate Human Resources department as a Campus Ambassador in which I represented and promoted UPMC's Summer Associate program by speaking to different classes, programs, and attending job fairs to share my experience.

I landed a full time position at Highmark around February of my senior year. I started out as a part time Talent Acquisition Coordinator in March, and then switched to a full time employee upon graduating. At Highmark, I support recruitment within the verticals of Health Affairs, Strategic Operations, and Health Marketing and Consumerism. I assist with the planning of job fairs and other recruitment events. I work very closely with our University Relations program as I am responsible for the UR Metrics and data analysis that I just recently presented to management with regards to changes/strategy improvements for the 2014 program.

Health Management Systems provides students with such a unique and extensive background in which students obtain such a variety of skills to be utilized in the work place. So many opportunities lie within Health Management Systems, whether it be more on the IT, business, or clinical side. Professor Shirely Cousino taught me so much within this field, in addition to the life lessons you can't learn from a textbook. My education has been extremely crucial to my career thus far. I felt very prepared entering the work world due to the skills and professionalism I gained from studying HMS at Duquesne University.
