In May of 2014, I graduated from Duquesne University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Management Systems (HMS). The HMS program is a composition of three relevant and demanding industry studies: Business, Information Technology (IT) and Healthcare. Duquesne University is a prestigious academic institution, and the HMS program prepared me for immediate success following graduation.

Some of these courses, such as Anatomy & Physiology, Etymology and Clinical Processes gave me a solid understanding of the medical environment and its terminology. Aside from the medical aspect of HMS, the business and IT courses have definitely proved their value in my career. A few examples include Project Management, Business Intelligence, Programming, Data Management and Accounting (Managerial and Financial). Yes-it takes hard work and dedication to earn your HMS degree. As a former athlete at Duquesne, I know all about time management and putting in long hours. But, the end result outweighs any type of hardships along the way.

Along with these courses, HMS requires each student to participate in an internship prior to graduation. A former professor of mine helped me contact an individual at Shadyside Hospital for an internship involving observation analysis and data study. The objective of this internship was to analyze the processes utilized by three different Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) during their daily routine, and discover ways to improve overall efficiency. I also had the opportunity to present my findings to both my mentor and the SLPs.

I am extremely happy with my decision to study HMS because of the vast array of knowledge that comes with the program. Many graduates in the United States struggle to find jobs following their schooling, but graduating from Duquesne University with a BS degree in HMS has allowed me the opportunity to be seen as a valuable candidate in multiple industries.

I am currently working in an Analytics and Consulting role for Truven Health Analytics. Though Truven Health is worldwide, I have had the opportunity to live in my hometown while working at our headquarters (located in Ann Arbor, MI). The best part of my job is the ability to work with a variety of well-known employers in a limitless range of industries. I produce and provide analyses for our clients' employee benefits, cost savings, utilization, eligibility, etc.

In closing, I am thankful for those who have helped mold me into who I am today. I am very proud to be a graduate of Duquesne University, and I strongly recommend the HMS program to anyone who has interest. It's a challenging, yet manageable curriculum that will open doors for you down the road. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors, and GO DUKES!
