Director of Costa Rica's Judicial School to serve as Visiting International Professor

Dr. Marvin Carvajal Pérez, Director of Costa Rica's Judicial School and Professor of Law at the University of Costa Rica, will be visiting international professor at Duquesne University School of Law October 8 - 16, 2012. While at the School of Law, Dr. Carvajal will deliver guest lectures, observe classes and clinics, and meet with state and federal judges and University officials. His visit will be the first in what is anticipated to be a series of exchanges and other cooperative programs to be undertaken pursuant to the Academic Cooperation Agreement signed in San José, Costa Rica in March 2012 between Duquesne University and the Supreme Court of Costa Rica.

 

National Conference of Metropolitan Courts holds annual meeting at Duquesne Oct. 9

The Cyril H. Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law and Duquesne University School of Law will host educational sessions of the National Conference of Metropolitan Courts' annual meeting on Tues., Oct. 9 in the University's Power Center Ballroom.

New Developments in the Law, Science, and Technology will feature presentations by Dr. Wecht and criminalist Dr. Henry Lee; a lunchtime discussion by Paula Hannaford-Agor, director of the Center of Jury Studies at the National Center for State Courts; and afternoon presentations on conviction integrity.

Featured speakers at the conviction integrity sessions include:

  • Professor John Rago of the Duquesne University School of Law
  • Honorable William Carpenter, administrative judge of the Montgomery County Criminal Division
  • Bruce Godschalk, a Pennsylvania exonoree
  • Professor Jennifer Dysart of the Department of Psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice
  • Honorable Stewart J. Greenleaf, chairman of the Pennsylvania State Senate's Judiciary Committee

The Honorable Donna Jo McDaniel, president judge of Allegheny County, chairs the NCMC. The National Conference of Metropolitan Courts is an independent, nonprofit, education and research organization of chief/presiding judges and court executives in the nation's largest state and local trial courts.
