Requests for Certification

All certifications require a signed, written request by the student or graduated student. Certifications include:

  • bar forms
  • graduation confirmations
  • letters of good standing
  • loan & insurance forms
  • class rank requests

A Request for Certification form must be completed and submitted to the Law School Registrar's Office.  The Registrar will accept a faxed, mailed, or hand-delivered form with a valid signature.  The Registrar will not accept telephone or email requests.

Student Certification to Practice

Pennsylvania Bar Admission Rule 321 and similar rules in other states authorize appearances in court under certain circumstances by students who have completed three semesters of law school.  The Law School Registrar will certify students as being of good character and competent legal ability and as being adequately trained to perform as a certified legal intern.

Students seeking certification in Pennsylvania should obtain the proper "Application for Certification for Formal Participation in Legal Matters by Law Students Under Pa.B.A.R. 321 and 322" and application instructions from the Pennsylvania Board of Law Examiners web site.  The form is accessible under Non-Bar Exam Admission --> Application for Certified Legal Intern (Rule 321).

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Law Clinic at 412.396.4704.

Veteran Certification

All veterans who are attending Duquesne University School of Law must inform the Law School Registrar, the Certifying Official, of their eligibility to receive educational benefits.  All pertinent and contact information must be provided to the Certifying Official as soon as possible.  Veteran's must also inform her/him from which Chapter you will be receiving the benefits – Chapters 30, 32, or 35, etc.

Required documentation includes a copy of the Certificate of Eligibility for all Veterans and a copy of the most recent DD-214 for veterans who are not on active duty.  If you have used your benefits at another school, you will also need to provide us with a completed Form 22-1995  Change of Programs of Place of Training.

In case of a change in your orders, you must inform the Certifying Official of your intent to return to the School of Law for each semester.

Bar Application Process

Questions regarding the Pennsylvania Bar Application Process and other State Bar Application Processes should be addressed to Mr. Richard Gaffney, Esquire, Director of Bar Services, at 412.396.1990.   Please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Gaffney.
