Power of Leadership Sessions


All workshops are held in the Wellness Resource Center, Room 205 in the Power Center from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

 

Day 1 -  Tuesday, October 2, 2012 - Align your Leadership Goals with the University's Strategies, Plan, Goals and Mission

1.  Leading with the Power of Influence in a Mission-driven University
Presenter: Fr. Jim McCloskey, Vice President for Mission & Identity

This presentation will focus on the Duquesne University mission as it pertains to the workplace. Participants will:

  • Increase their understanding of the Mission and enhance leadership attitudes to support the Mission in daily job responsibilities
  • Deepen awareness of the critical pillars of the Mission
  • Learn current demographics of Spiritans today and on campus

2.  Building an Inclusive Environment with the Power of Influence
Presenter: Marla Bradford, HR, Senior Employment Recruiter

This interactive session will give participants the opportunity to engage in a dialogue about issues that impact the campus climate for diversity and inclusion. Participants will:

  • Distinguish between diversity and inclusion
  • Realize the strategic benefit of connecting with a wider scope of people
  • Identify the barriers that hinder inclusion, and learn the counter-behaviors that promote inclusion
  • Acquire the resources to connect with others
  • Commit to action steps for stronger connections

3. Mindful Leadership-Shaping the Power of Influence
Presenter: Dr. Michael, Forlenza, Assistant Dean, School of Leadership and Professional Advancement

This interactive session will help participants discover how being mindful, personally and professionally will enable leaders to see more clearly, listen more deeply and respond more effectively. Participants will:

  • Begin and maintain a regular mindfulness practice
  • Learn several different techniques of mindfulness
  • Discover how to identify roadblocks and challenges to productive mindfulness

Day 2 - Tuesday, October 9, 2012 - Maximize your Power of Influence

 

4.  Legal Issues and Compliance in the Workplace
Presenters: Ryan Dawson, HR, Associate Director of Human Resources; Linda Drago,
Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel, Genny Hughes, Disability Claims Manager

This session will provide general information regarding employment issues, legal implications, affirmative action guidelines, and present an overview of select DU policies and procedures. Participants will:

  • Learn facts of employment law that directly affects decisions made by managers
  • Increase their understanding of various affirmative action issues, which are critical in the workplace
  • Gain general knowledge regarding compliant DU employment

5.  Coach for Influence and Power to De-stress!
Presenter: Lois Bradley, Bradley Partnerships, Inc.

During this practical application of mindfulness the interactive session will engage participants to:

  • Develop an increased ability to relax, incite a peaceful and calm attitude to manage the stresses arising from work and personal life
  • Discover how to create an environment of coaching that both inspires and supports engagement, and learn to listen for understanding and support engagement
  • Better understand how to pursue excellence in the workplace and the role of the leader in fostering excellent work at both the individual and organizational level 

Day 3 - Tuesday, October 16, 2012 - Define your Inner Leader and Stewardship

 

6. Financial Responsibilities: Everyone Has a Role
Presenter: Robert Kollar, CPA, Assistant. Professor, Graduate School of Business

This session will address the importance of ethical decision making with regard to spending and the use of University property, equipment, time and other resources. Participants will:

  • Gain understanding between cash flow and expense budgets
  • Learn the basics of the budget process and how to utilize it effectively

7. Ethics in the Workplace: Theory and Practical
Presenters: President Charles Dougherty, Aaron Mitcham, Director, Internal Audit

This session is designed as a capstone to integrate the concepts presented in the previous six sessions within an ethical context, incorporating both the theoretical and moral aspects along with the practical implications.

Theoretical:

  • Discover the importance of metaphysical and theoretical tenant of morality vs. ethics
  • Be aware of the application of ethical decision making and the commonality of ethical situations at work

Practical Application:

  • Gain knowledge to develop strategies for ethical dilemmas that leaders face and how to apply ethical considerations in everyday, practical ways
  • Using group case study scenarios, identify the ethical principles in the case including the best resolution and course of action
  • Explore the commitment of fostering ethical behavior which is necessary for faculty, staff and students, and all outside constituents as the ultimate challenge and goal.
