Double Majors

Political science makes a great double major!

For the double majors below, some courses double-count, saving you time. 

Double major with International Relations (IR)

Political Science (first major) and IR (second major):

  • For the political science first major, students complete all requirements for the political science degree (30 political science credits including POSC 245).

  • For the IR second major, students complete all requirements for the IR degree except IR 245.  POSC 245 substitutes for IR 245.

IR (first major) and Political Science (second major):

  • For the IR first major, students complete all requirements for the IR degree (36 credits including IR 245).

  • For the political science second major, students complete all requirements for the political science degree except POSC 245.  IR 245 substitutes for POSC 245. 

Double Major with Economics

Political Science (first major) and Economics (second major)

  • For the Political Science first major, students complete all requirements for the political science degree (30 political science credits including POSC 292W: Public Policy as an elective).

  • For the Economics second major, students complete 27 required and elective credits of Economics courses--and POSC 292W.

Economics (first major) and Political Science (second major)

  • For the Economics first major, students complete all requirements for the Economics degree (30 economics credits including Economics 453: Pubic Economics)

  • For the Political Science second major, students complete 15 credits of core political science courses, 12 credits of elective political science courses including the political science capstone elective--and Economics 453.

Double Major with Communication & Rhetorical Studies (C&RS)

Political Science (first major) and C&RS (second major):

  • For the Political Science first major, students complete all requirements for the political science degree (30 political science credits).

  • For the C&RS second major, students complete 24 C&RS credits as described here.  Any 6 political science credits substitute for the 6 remaining C&RS credits.

C&RS (first major) and Political Science (second major):

  • For the C&RS first major, students complete all requirements for the degree (30 C&RS credits including COMM 406: Political Communication).

  • For the Political Science second major, students complete 15 credits of core political science courses, 12 credits of elective political science courses including the political science capstone elective--and Comm 406.
