The Goett Endowed Scholarship
Each academic year the Sociology Department awards a merit scholarship to one or more sociology majors who demonstrate outstanding scholarship, commitment to sociology and leadership and service to the community. Since the scholarship was established in 1999 the department has awarded $257,986.00 to 29 students.
The Goett Scholarship Winners for 2015 are
Grant Schwoebel and Natalee Wilmer.
Hazel and Edward Goett are long-time friends of the Sociology Department.
Their family has established an endowment in their names.
We are honored to have received these funds for scholarships for outstanding sociology students.
We believe that successful applicants will be good students with excellence in sociology. They should submit the application form, and a personal statement, which should include their future goals, what a sociology degree means to them and how they demonstrate scholarship, leadership and service and commitment to sociology. In addition, include a resume, and two letters of recommendation from faculty, at least one of whom is a member of the Sociology Department. These materials should demonstrate balance in the following:
Sociology majors should have completed at least 60 credits with a minimum of 9 in Sociology. Thus, students are eligible upon completion of their sophomore year. They must have an overall Grade Point Average of 2.75 or higher, with a 3.00 or higher Grade Point Average in the major. Membership in honorary societies enhances one’s chances.
Leadership and Service
Students should show involvement in academic, civic, service activities or sports. Occupying positions of leadership (for example, holding office in an organization) will enhance one’s chances.
Commitment to Sociology
Students should demonstrate a level of commitment to the discipline, its base of knowledge and skills. This will be determined in both the written personal statement completed by each applicant and in the faculty letters of recommendation.
Application Deadline: April 11, 2016.
Please submit the application, personal statement, resume, and two letters of recommendation to:
