Disaster Bioethics

Dr. Henk ten Have

Apparently the world is suffering from an increasing number of disasters: the 2004 Tsunami in the Indian Ocean, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and the 2011 earthquake/tsunami in Japan. These disasters all lead to an unprecedented wave of generosity and humanitarian aid. However, the ethical reflection on disaster relief and humanitarian aid is not well developed.

This project is part of an international effort to clarify the ethical issues in this relatively new area of healthcare. The first results have been discussed in a workshop at the Brocher Foundation at Geneva (April 2011). These papers will be developed into chapters for a book on Disaster Bioethics that is scheduled to be published in 2012.
