Abstract:
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals face challenges when accessing and receiving care that may lead to preventable adverse health outcomes. Efforts to improve the health of LGBT individuals within medicine have been built on activism in multiple realms including patient care, medical education, research, and advocacy. This talk will discuss how individuals can catalyze change within institutions in each of these realms, and successful outcomes of activism within the medical setting using LGBT health as an example.

Bio:

Kristen L. Eckstrand holds her M.D. and Ph.D. in neuroscience from Vanderbilt University, and is currently a resident in Psychiatry at University of Pittsburgh's Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. Dr. Eckstrand is the founder and former director of the Vanderbilt Program for LGBT Health, the second program in the country housed within an academic medical center to address the needs of LGBT patients, trainees, staff, and faculty. Dr. Eckstrand is nationally recognized for her work as the founding chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges' Advisory Committee on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Sex Development, co-editing and authoring the ground-breaking text Implementing Curricular and Institutional Climate Changes to Improve Health Care for Individuals Who Are LGBT, Gender Nonconforming, or Born with DSD, and has recently edited the book Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Patient Health: A Clinical Guide to Preventative, Primary, and Specialist Care, to be published by Springer in 2015. She also serves as the Vice President of Education for the board of directors of GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBT Equality and as a member of the American Medical Association's LGBT Advisory Committee. Dr. Eckstrand has been recognized for her commitment to diversity through the 2011 Vanderbilt Levi Watkins Jr. Award, the 2013 American Medical Association's Foundation in Excellence Leadership Award, and the 2013 AMSA/GLMA Health Achievement Award for leadership in LGBT health.
