Dr. Thompson-Uberuaga's major interests are in the areas of philosophical, systematic, and political theology. His doctoral dissertation offered a perspective on the miracle-element in religion in the light of Karl Rahner's thought, and he has continued to contribute to Rahner studies, being a founding and active member of the Karl Rahner Society. He is also active in the Eric Voegelin Society, concentrating on the intersection between political theory and religion/ theology, and has been an associate member of the American Political Science Association.
Mysticism and spirituality are also cognate areas of research. An area of recent research and interest is Spanish and Basque philosophy and theology, especially that of José Ortega y Gasset and Xavier Zubiri.
Dr. Thompson-Uberuaga also served for many years as an associate editor of Horizons and as an editorial consultant for Theological Studies. He received the Duquesne University Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarship in 1990, and for Excellence in Service in 1998. And he was an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Catholic Theological Society of America (1987-89), and then elected its vice president for 1994, president-elect for 1995, and president for 1996.
Dr. Thompson-Uberuaga was awarded the rank of emeritus professor upon his retirement in 2008, and he continues his research, writing, and lecturing, living now in his native state of Idaho.
