Double Majors

History and English (54 credits total)

As History and English are closely allied disciplines, and as a double major program may result in a more coherent course of study, the departments created some options for students wishing to concentrate in both fields.  Note: a student may still choose to do both majors independently, fulfilling all credit requirements in both, instead of through the designated programs below.

Students have the option to complete the double major with History as their primary major or with English as their primary major.

History and Women's/Gender Studies (54 credits total)

The major in Women's and Gender Studies:

• is not a free-standing major; it may only be declared as a second major.

• must complement another major (for example, besides History and WSGS, English and WSGS, Philosophy and WSGS, Nursing and WSGS, or Music Performance and WSGS)

History and Art History (credits vary)

As undertaking a double major program, rather than simply pursuing two majors, may result in a more coherent course of study, the department has created the following options for students wishing to concentrate in the complementary fields of History and Art History.  A double major in History and Art History is a particularly attractive option for those considering further studies and then a career in Public History.

Students have the option to complete the double major with History as their primary major or with Art History as their primary major. Credits vary depending on which major is the primary. See the requirements below for more information.

Note: a student may still choose to do both majors independently, fulfilling all credit requirements in both (61 credits), instead of through the designated programs below.
