Fieldwork Experience: The Internship Program

Fieldwork (SOCI 450) combines independent study under a faculty mentor with an internship placement in a local organization. Students utilize their ‘real world' internship experiences in combination with their social theory to produce sociological analyses of a civic not-for-profit organization or a government agency. Students seek a placement and faculty mentor that reflects their individual interests and career goals.
SOCI 450 is an option for all Sociology majors. Placements are also available for students pursuing the Gerontology Certificate. Senior Sociology majors may register for two semesters of Fieldwork and receive up to 12 academic credits. Juniors will be considered, based on credits completed toward the major.
Some of the recent placements include: Family Links Emergency Shelter; Providence Family Support Center (Teens); Mayview State Hospital; United Way of Allegheny County; National Center for Juvenile Justice; American Red Cross; Community Loan Fund of SW PA; Rx Council of Western PA; SW PA Human Services; Center for Victims of Violent Crime; U.S Postal Inspection Service; Women's Center & Shelter; Bridge to Independence; Girls Hope of Pittsburgh; Center for Family Excellence; Wesley Institute Family & Child Development Center; Family Court; Mt. Lebanon Police Dept. Internship Program; Center for Victims of Violent Crime Community Options, Inc.; Girl Scouts of Western PA; Drug Enforcement Administration.
This course requires the prior agreement of a sociology faculty mentor and of a sponsoring organization, and should be arranged at least two months before the start of the semester. Students interested in pursuing a fieldwork experience should contact the Sociology Chair, Michael Irwin (irwinm@duq.edu, 412-396-6488, 504a College Hall) to begin the process.
