Service-learning in the Learning Communities
Each learning community has at least one service-learning project. This service-learning project allows students to explore the theme and issues related to the learning community.
The service-learning project provides a common ground of experience through which students can relate what they learn in their classes with one another and to their experience outside their classes. Service-learning in first-year learning communities thereby enhances the learning experience and eases adjustment to university life by allowing students to see practical applications to the academic material in their classes as well as a basis on which to criticize and develop this material.
Many students also form long lasting relationships through service-learning, gain meaningful experience working with diverse populations, and make good connections which may aid them with their careers.
