Faculty Spotlight: James Nova

jim novaJames Nova is the brass area coordinator for the Mary Pappert School of Music, in addition to being a member of the trombone section of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO). On December 17, 2015, the PSO performed the music of Star Wars along with the release of the newest movie in the series, The Force Awakens.

Nova organized a pre-concert performance (including himself) of 22 trombonists from around the state of Pennsylvania featuring his trombone choir arrangements of music from the Star Wars films. The performers included students from Duquesne, Carnegie Mellon University, and Penn State University, as well as other area professionals, and the group was conducted by the PSO's principal trombonist, Peter Sullivan. To add a special touch, all 22 trombonists wore Jedi robes as they performed Nova's arrangements.

Another of Nova's hobbies is to make overdub recordings of himself playing full-score arrangements. Many of these recordings can be found on his Soundcloud page (https://soundcloud.com/jimnova). These recordings also make it very clear that his love for the music of Star Wars goes far beyond the walls of Heinz Hall or the Mary Pappert School of Music.
