Course Description

Teaching the Beginning Band is a two-credit, graduate-level course open to school music educators. The one-week course meets daily during morning and afternoon sessions, with a two-fold focus: Special Topics, and Instrument Pedagogy. Special Topics include Instrumentation, Recruitment, Instrument Matching, Scheduling, Initial Instruction, Method Books, Resources, Grade 1 Repertoire, and the First Concert. Instrument Pedagogy looks at recommended instruments and accessories, and step-by-step instruction from the beginning stages to first tone. Specific instruments covered throughout the week include Flute; Oboe; Clarinet; Alto Saxophone; Trumpet; Horn; Trombone; Euphonium; and Percussion (Battery, Keyboard, and Trap).
