Course Description

Process and Analysis: From the Composer's Perspective will explore a sweeping array of seminal works of classical music, from the Middle Ages to the present. Instead of starting with standard models of form, we will investigate the compositional processes that yield these forms, focusing on melody, texture, rhythm, and harmony, as well as the crucial role of the interaction of these elements. Throughout the course, we will trace the evolution of compositional ideas and techniques, giving the students a broad perspective on Western music. At the same time, we will explore certain pieces in depth.
