Particle Physics

Particle physics seeks to understand the very nature of matter of all kinds: naturally occurring kinds as well as exotic kinds observed in conditions created by experiment. While contemporary research in particle physics can specialize in high energy or medium energy, and the methodology can be theory or experiment, the thrust at Duquesne is in experimental medium-energy particle physics. The focus is on nuclear physics with a particular emphasis on studying the quarks and gluons in protons and neutrons via electromagnetic probes.
