The residency program focuses on delivering medication therapy and disease state management services with an emphasis on ambulatory care and preventative care services. The resident rotates through each site on a longitudinal basis. The Center for Pharmacy Care (CPC) is the primary practice site. CPC is a pharmacist-coordinated provider of disease prevention and disease management services for the Duquesne University campus and Pittsburgh community. Established in October 2002, CPC provides wellness, disease prevention and medication therapy management programs, focusing on hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes and asthma. The Center offers campus and community health screenings, lifestyle counseling, educational seminars, drug therapy review and management, disease state management and outcome reporting for certain health conditions. The Center specializes in point of care testing and adult immunization services as well as operating as a travel health center.
The Duquesne University Pharmacy is a first of its kind, outpatient community pharmacy owned and operated by the university located 2 miles from campus. This unique site offers state-of-the-art, comprehensive clinical pharmacy services, operates as a 340B contract pharmacy, and serves as a CLIA waived laboratory facility. The pharmacy is dedicated to serving an uninsured and underinsured population in order to increase access to medications and proper utilization for safe and effectiveness medication use.
The Spirit of Health is a mobile health unit that travels out to various regions of Pittsburgh and the surrounding regions to offer free health screenings and preventative care services to those in need. The resident rotates to a variety of sites to offer these screenings to the public as well as acts as a preceptor to IPPE students on a service learning rotation in the School of Pharmacy.
In addition to the clinical sites, the resident also rotates through the Pharmaceutical Information Center and a telephonic medication therapy management platform to gain patient care exposure throughout the residency year.
