GPA and Credit Requirements:
Undergraduate Academic Policies:
A grade of “C” or better must be attained in all nursing and non-nursing courses, including electives and laboratory courses, in order to progress in the nursing curriculum. All clinical courses will be graded Pass(P)/Non-Pass(NP).
A GPA of 2.5 is required by the end of the second semester of the freshman year in order to progress to the sophomore clinical courses and is the minimum acceptable GPA for the remainder of the program.
The School of Nursing subscribes to all of the general University requirements for academic warning, probation, and dismissal as indicated in the Registration and Scholastic Policies section of the current edition of the University Undergraduate Catalog 2008-2009. Guidelines specific to the School of Nursing in some circumstances may supersede university policy. This includes policies related to academic warning, probation, and dismissal as follows:
1. Students who do not achieve and maintain a minimum cumulative QPA of 2.5 will be placed on academic warning and will not be permitted to progress to any nursing clinical course or its concurrent theory course.
2. If a QPA of 2.5 is not achieved by this student at the end of the following semester, the student will be placed on academic probation and not be permitted to progress to any nursing clinical course or its concurrent theory course.
3. If a QPA of 2.5 is not achieved by this student at the end of the following semester, the student will be automatically dismissed from the School of Nursing.
Graduate Academic Policies:
Graduate students must maintain a minimum cumulative quality point average (QPA) of 3.0 and must achieve a “B” grade or higher in all courses. Any student whose QPA for a semester falls below a 3.0 or receives a course grade lower than a “B” will receive an academic warning. A student may be given an academic warning only once during the program of study. If a student’s cumulative QPA remains under 3.0 for more than two consecutive semesters, the student will be dismissed from the program.
“C” or below “C” grades and “N” grades are not acceptable. Courses in which these grades have been earned must be repeated during the next semester in which the course is offered. If a student subsequently receives two unacceptable grades in the same course or in more than two courses, the student will be dismissed from the program.
The Academic Standing Committee will review all cases in which students have received any grade below a “B” or when a semester or cumulative QPA falls below 3.0.
