Supply Chain Connection

Networking Event Continues to Grow and Provide Opportunities for Duquesne Students

Duquesne University’s A.J. Palumbo School of Business is home to one of the area’s only supply chain management programs housed in an international school of business. The year 2016 marked the 25th anniversary of this esteemed program.  Growing from just 19 students in 1999, to the more than 225 students currently enrolled, the program boasts a 100percent job placement rate.

The success of this program and its students can be attributed to three things: engagement, innovation and impact.  Each year, students have the opportunity to engage with more than 25 corporations and 60-75 of their corporate representatives at the Supply Chain Connection, a networking event hosted by the Duquesne Supply Chain Council.

This event, now in its tenth year, connects students and employers in a round table discussion that simulates “speed dating,” and provides students with access to a variety of corporate representatives who share information on their organizations and potential career opportunities.

John Mawhinney, director of the supply chain management program and assistant professor of supply chain management, said, “The goal is to provide students with some insight into a company, some direction as to what to expect. It is about getting to know the right people.”

Several corporations at this year’s event were represented by Duquesne alumni from the supply chain program who are now employed by Dick’s Sporting Goods, the Elliott Group, StarKist Co., Mylan, PPG and ThermoFisher Scientific.

John Russo, B’74, GB’83, process innovation leader at the Elliott Group, has attended nearly all of the Connection events. “I have tried to give students a perspective regarding how supply chain classes fit into our business including positions in planning, purchasing, inventory control and logistics,” he said.

Mike Lemirande, director of North America operations at ThermoFisher Scientific Group, notes, “The event has always been well organized and professional. The quality of the students that we interact with has supported our college recruiting process for our supply chain and logistics department. ThermoFisher Scientific has hired several students from Duquesne’s Supply Chain Management Program that we met during the SCM Connection event.”
