Spring 2012 Discussion of Reading
The Power of White Privilege and the Potential for Action: An Introduction
Tuesday, January 24 and February 7, 3 - 5 pm
20 Chatham Square (Murphy Building)
Facilitators: Erin Rentschler (English & CTE) & Laurel Willingham-McLain (CTE)
Erin and Laurel will join participants in exploring whiteness and developing strategies for opposing systemic racism. In this combo book study and workshop, we will use White Privilege: Essential Readings on the Other Side of Racism as our guide for reflection, writing, and discussion. In the first session, we will uncover the power of white invisibility, the past, and privilege. The second will be devoted to learning how to be effective allies for people who don't benefit from such power. Participants need to commit to reading the book and attending both sessions.
We encourage participants who are completely new to this topic to join us. Free books are available to the first 10 people who sign up.
