Email - Supplementing POP & IMAP

This page no longer applies to Student Email! Students, please see our page on Outlook Live Student Email

WebMail can be used to supplement your POP or IMAP access if you are out of the office or away from the computer you normally use (where your mail client is configured).

Important points to note with POP:

  • Deleting messages from WebMail is like deleting them from the mail server so they will not be accessible in your mail client (if they are not already present) Once deleted the messages go to the Web-Trash folder, which is permanently deleted nightly and not recoverable. It is not recommended to delete messages via WebMail unless you are 110% sure that you will not need the message.
  • When you access WebMail from off campus your personal folders and address book will not be available.
  • Settings that are in place on your local mail client will not be present (ie. signature).
  • If your mail client is set to remove messages from the server then you will only be able to view e-mail that has arrived after you last pulled e-mail with your mail client.
  • You may see messages that you normally do not see while using your mail client. This is due to filters you have setup on your local mail client not affecting the mail that is still on the server.
  • When you send messages in WebMail they will not appear in your sent items folder on your mail client. The best way around this is to CC: or BCC: yourself on all messages that you send via WebMail, they will then appear in your inbox and you can move them to your sent items folder when you are using your mail client. Alternatively, after you have sent messages from WebMail, you can log into WebMail , go to the Web-Sent folder, check all of the messages, choose Inbox in the "Move Selected to:" drop down and click the move button. You can then move the messages from your inbox to your sent folder in your mail client.
