For those who want access to the Duquesne network & resources and to the Internet from off campus, you will need to subscribe to a commercial Internet service provider (ISP). You may use any ISP to provide this access. Different people have unique needs and therefore need to make some choices to narrow the range of ISPs appropriate to them. You can choose from national providers and local providers, and from unlimited, hourly, and free service plans. To sign up, go to the provider's web site or call them. The ISP will provide a user name and password and instructions for configuring your computer to dial in to their network.
Below is a table of what topics and information will be covered on this page:
Select an ISP that is a "Local Phone Call" from where you will be dialing. Whether you use a local ISP or a nationwide one, make sure that their list of dial-up numbers includes a local number near you.
Select a plan with unlimited service or a generous allocation of hours. Most Internet service providers offer unlimited access to the Internet for a flat fee. This means that you could connect your computer all day and night to the Internet for that same price.
Some ISP's offer "tiered" services that offer plans from as low as 3 to 5 hours per month at a range of modest prices. If you only plan to log on briefly each day, such as to retrieve e-mail, this may be enough. However, you'll need to monitor your usage closely.
