Faculty, staff, & administrators connecting wired in a DU building
If you are a faculty, staff, or administrator attempting to connect to the campus network with a DU owned machine, you should be able to simply start the computer and it will already be connected. New faculty, however, may first need to make sure that they have an available internet connection or port; more information on this subject is available in the document on Port Activation.
Students connecting in the LLCs
Below is a brief summary of what you will find on this document:
LLC General Info
Every Living Learning Center room is wired to the campus network, and to the greater Internet. This connection is a high-speed Ethernet connection. Students who have computers in their rooms do not need a modem to use the network connection; they need a network card known as an Ethernet card. (DuqNet wireless is not available inside the LLC's)
If you are a resident student (or if you commute and bring your laptop with you) you can use our high-speed Ethernet network to access Duquesne services and the Internet. Network access ports are available in all student residence rooms, 1 port per student. Using the network access ports requires that you have an Ethernet card and a network cable (called an RJ45 or CAT5 cable). If you don't already have a card (the connection in your computer looks like a phone line port, but is a little larger), you can buy one from the Duquesne Computer Store. Technicians can install the card for a small fee. You can arrange this installation at the Computer Store.
Requirements
In order to be allowed to connect to the campus network, your computer and Ethernet card must meet certain minimum requirements.
Computer: Obviously it must work. We recommend the computer be newer than 3 years old. There are some specific requirements for current versions of the operating system, available disk space, and RAM. For the 2008/2009 school year, these requirements are:
Ethernet Card: Ethernet cards are manufactured by many companies. All newer Ethernet cards should work on the Campus Network. Most computers come from the manufacturer with the proper network card built in; others you may need to install yourself or have installed through the Computer Store. Any card will be placed on our network; however, to ensure the integrity of the campus network, CTS reserves the right to remove cards that create undue strain on the network.
If your computer does not have a network card, the Campus Computer Store can sell you a card at cost.
Students can get their connection set up either by doing it themselves (self-install) or by having a technician install their Ethernet card through the Computer Store . Most students do self-installs to speed up the process of getting on the network; some take advantage of the Computer Store's fee based services .
You can also install the on-campus network components yourself. Below is a brief guide to self installation of the campus network components:
If you experience difficulty, we ask that you consult our documentation on the web (using a lab or friend's machine) with some quick fixes for a connection problem. You can access this information from the page on Connection Troubleshooting. If you still experience difficulty after consulting the website, you can reach the Help Desk at x4357 or help@duq.edu.
