Office 2007 is Microsoft's recent revision to the popular software suite including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Publisher for the Windows operating system. Office 2007 is not available for Apple's operating system. This revision, released in January of 2007, contains the most extensive changes in functionality and user interface in the suite's history.

If you are a user of the current version of the Office suite (known as Office 2003) you can continue to use the current version. If you share documents with other people using Office 2007 you may encounter problems loading their documents or in other functionality. While there are software updates for Office 2003 which enable it to be more compatible with Office 2007 documents, these updates provide basic functionality and conversion services.
For information and access to downloading these Office 2003 updates see:

The answer to this question is determined by what you do and with whom you share your documents. The interface of Office 2007 is dramatically different than previous versions. You will have a fairly steep learning curve for general use of the suite. While some of the enhancements in the applications are very powerful, there is no critical need to change the suite of products you are using at the time of this writing (spring 2007).
If you regularly collaborate with students, faculty and administrators that will or already have transitioned to Office 2007, you may experience improved collaboration by migrating yourself.
If you would like to continue to use Office 2003 and share documents with people using Office 2007, Microsoft provides a downloadable software update for Office 2003. This software product provides fundamental file conversion functionality. For more information regarding this software update, see:

There are some hardware requirements ensuring the reliable operation of Office 2007. Some computers may not possess the appropriate resources to run Office 2007. If your computer is less than two years old, it will most likely be able to run Office 2007 satisfactorily. While there may be exceptions, CTS technicians will advise you upon request.
If you are an employee of Duquesne University your license for Office 2007 is covered under our campus wide site license. You can contact the Help Desk for specific instructions on how to obtain Office 2007. CTS currently provides full support for University Employees using Windows Office 2003, Macintosh Office 2004 and the new Windows Office 2007. CTS follows Microsoft's product support lifecycles. As Microsoft retires support for any product (including earlier versions of the Office Suite) CTS will follow within twelve months.
It is predictable that by the Fall of 2009 Microsoft will no longer support the Office 2003 suite. CTS will follow those guidelines and begin requiring all users to migrate their software accordingly.
