The University will implement a new domain that all DU computers will be migrated to, requiring a technician to physically visit each computer on campus. We anticipate that this project will begin in late October 2008.
The overall goal of this project is to increase security and provide greater Help Desk and Desktop Support.
Increased Security
Benefits to the community will include improved security on our computers and network eliminating compromised machines that slow network performance and cause internet outages across campus.
Remote Assistance
Another benefit is improved Help Desk support via a remote assistance tool. This will facilitate getting many issues resolved more quickly by providing remote functionality where in the past a technician would have to visit the computer to address the problem.
This will allow the Help Desk to request remote access from you to your on-campus computer. When you allow the Help Desk to provide remote assistance you will be able to see what the Help Desk analyst is doing on your computer as you troubleshoot the problem together.
Generic Domain Accounts
The largest change that will occur during this migration deals with the use of generic Staff domain accounts.
Consistent with the standards set by Banner accounts, generic accounts will be phased out. All domain resources (DU computer network access, printing, server access) will be accessed by logging in with the individuals username.
Student Employees that are coded as such in Banner will have Duquesne domain accounts auto-created for them at the beginning of each semester. No account request form will be required for these accounts.
These accounts will have the same account name as a student employees MultiPass account and will have a default password upon creation that will have to be changed at first login. The passwords associated with these accounts will expire and will need to be reset by the student.
Individuals will only be able to login on computers owned by their department. Domain account password expiration will be consistent with the current environment, and expire every 120 days. Again this will help secure our desktop computer environment against potential attacks due to shared passwords.
Remote Users
Computers that are not located on-campus will need to be brought on site during the time that their department is migrated to the new domain. This will allow remote machines to be updated with the newest Symantec Anti-Virus, operating system updates, etc. keeping the machine more secure. Additionally this will prevent a potential loss of DU network resources.
This deployment will begin at the end of October/beginning on November for campus. Please check this website at a later time for a specific department schedule.
