Upcoming Dean Gormley Appearance on American Experience
We are pleased to pass along this news release about Dean Ken Gormley’s appearance on a major PBS special about President Bill Clinton this coming Tuesday….
Duquesne Law Dean Featured in ‘American Experience: Clinton’ on PBS
Duquesne University School of Law Dean Ken Gormley will be among the experts featured in the two-part, four-hour PBS special, American Experience: Clinton, on Feb. 20-21. Gormley will appear in the second-part of the special airing from 8 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, on WQED-TV, Pittsburgh’s PBS station. An Emmy award-winning show, American Experience highlights the people and stories that have shaped the nation’s past and present.
Gormley was sought out for the show based on his highly acclaimed book, The Death of American Virtue: Clinton vs. Starr. Released in 2010 by Crown Publishing Group, the book focuses on the scandal that marred the presidency of President Bill Clinton. The Death of American Virtue made the New York Times bestseller list and earned an ABA Silver Gavel award.
During his interview for the show, Gormley said he described the complex scandals—from Whitewater to Paula Jones to Monica Lewinsky—that nearly toppled the Clinton presidency and led to the second impeachment trials of a president in American history.
“I had a keen sense that the filmmakers were intent on capturing for the show the ‘true’ Bill Clinton—both his brilliant successes as a public figure and his failures that caused him to be dogged by scandal,” Gormley explained. “It should be an incredible film.”
In its description of the American Experience special, the film “explores the fascinating story of an American president who rose from a turbulent childhood in Arkansas to become one of the most successful politicians in modern American history and one of the most complex and conflicted characters ever to stride across the public stage.”
In addition to Gormley, other figures interviewed for the episode include White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta, White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Meyers, White House Counsel Bernard Nussbaum, former Independent Counsel Ken Starr, journalists and many others.
“It was an honor to be part of such a major, historical film on the Clinton presidency,” said Gormley. “The American Experience series represents the gold standard for serious documentaries that contribute to understanding and preserving our nation’s history.”
