About the Seminar

Amidst the widening national debate over the use of "familial DNA" searches, in which investigators look for close-but-not-exact matches between DNA evidence collected at crime scenes and data banks of DNA collected from convicted felons, Duquesne University's Wecht Institute and Bayer School will convene some of the premier legal scientific and public policy experts on this issue.

The Lindbergh Kidnapping: A Story in Law and Drama

On April 30, 2011, the Law School (with the Cyril H. Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law at Duquesne University) presented an extremely provocative CLE Seminar on the Lindbergh Kidnapping: A Study in Law and Drama, hosted by Professor Yochum with Mr. William Cameron. If you missed the program, you need not miss the play!

Terra Nova Theatre Group will present the PRIZE-WINNING DRAMA William Cameron’s VIOLET SHARP at Grey Box Theatre, the winner of the 2007 Julie Harris Playwriting Prize and an historically accurate portrayal of one of the most tragic aspects of the 1932 Lindbergh kidnapping, opening Thursday, June 9th.

Based on original statements, letters and police reports, Violet Sharp recreates the riveting story of a 27-year old British domestic in service to the Lindbergh's who fell under suspicion during the kidnapping investigation. Having lied about her whereabouts on the night of the crime, Violet--pursued by her own personal demons, as well as the police--strives to clear her name but only strengthens police conviction that she is guilty.

This Terra Nova production features Theo Allyn as Violet Sharp. Allyn was seen most recently playing multiple characters in City Theater's Precious Little. Violet's chief nemesis Captain Harry Walsh will be played by Sam Turich. Directed by Terra Nova's artistic director William Cameron, the cast includes Allison Cahill, Julianne Avolio, Alex Etling, John Michnya, Amy Portenlanger, Liz Roberts, and Tyler Scherer.

"Cameron's story of how this horrible crime destroyed the life of Violet Sharp raises the stakes, dramatically, to heights I would not have thought possible. This is social history as high art, a gripping and important play,"said Jim Fisher, true crime author of The Lindbergh Case and The Ghosts of Hopewell: Setting the Record Straight in the Lindbergh Case. "A Conversation with Jim Fisher" is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, June 11th at 3:30 (for free), hosted by Professor Yochum. A discussion with Fisher will follow that evening's performance.

Violet Sharp, funded partially by a grant from the Laurel Foundation, runs Thursday, June 9, through Saturday, June 25, with 2 p.m. Sunday matinees. The Grey Box Theatre is located at 3595 Butler Street.
