Preparing for College

As your high school years progress, you might be wondering what steps can be taken to prepare yourself for a college-level curriculum.  Here are a few things you might want to consider:

  • Advanced Placement (AP) or Honors Level courses - Take more challenging courses throughout your junior and senior years.
  • Dual Enrollment courses - What better way to prepare for a college curriculum than by actually taking college courses? Duquesne offers qualifying high school students a chance to do that through our College Credits in High School Program (CCHS).
  • Practice for the SAT and/or ACT - Taking practice tests, and pre-exams might help you prepare mentally for the real thing. Or, just take the actual exams and see how you do.  Duquesne takes your highest tests scores, so it is to your benefit to take the exams multiple times.

College Decisions

We know that deciding which university to attend is not easy.  With so many choices it is sometimes difficult to even know where to begin.

You can make an educated decision by asking yourself these important questions.

Think about your personality, lifestyle, and academic interests:

  • Do you want a large school or a small one?

  • Do you want to be in a city or a smaller town?  Close to home or far away?

  • Do you have a specific course of study in mind, or do you want to explore a number of fields?

  • Are their extracurricular activities or sports that are important to you?

Your academic performance, cost of education, financial aid needs, and housing options are also important factors.
