Dr. Coohill specializes in 19th century Britain, Ireland, and the British Empire. His research concentrates on the connections and clashes between politics and culture, as expressed in the fine arts, especially architecture and painting. He is currently working on a book on the building of the new Houses of Parliament in the 1830s and 1840s, and is editing the diary of Sir George Hayter, who was Queen Victoria's portrait artist and a noted political portraitist. His imperial interests focus on Ireland and India in the nineteenth century, and he hopes to start on a comparative history of their imperial experiences someday.
