Professional Coaching

Coaching is both art and science.  Professional coaches understand how to communicate with clients in a way that gets real results.  An effective coach guides, inspires, and empowers others to help them reach their potential – even if that potential has been hidden.

Duquesne University’s School of Leadership and Professional Advancement has partnered with the International Coach Federation (ICF), the largest association of professional coaches, for this exciting program.  It is the only program in Pennsylvania affiliated with the ICF.

The Professional Coaching Certificate Program is designed for:

  •  those seeking to become professional coaches in a private practice
  • managers and professionals hoping to enhance their innate coaching skills to fundamentally improve their organization’s talent retention and relationship with employees
  • internal trainers and organizational development professionals charged with training other managers and sharing their coaching expertise
  • near-retirees seeking an introduction to this exciting field and preparing for a rewarding career they can pursue independently for many years to come
  • practicing coaches who want to earn continuing education credits to take their certification to a higher level.

Program Outcomes:
Participants will learn how to coach people within organizations (internal coaching) or in a private practice (external coaching). After completing this program, students will be:

  • Able to explain and implement the Duquesne Coaching Model that upholds a client as naturally creative, resourceful and whole
  • Proficient in developing trust and intimacy in a coaching relationship through active listening and powerful questioning
  • Competent with a variety of basic coaching approaches and effective multidisciplinary tools for coaching a client’s whole life
  • Conversant in the unique aspects of coaching as differentiated from other professions like therapy, consulting and training
  • Skilled in maintaining professional ethics and standards and competent in managing difficult client interactions
  • Capable of developing their own coaching practice within an organization or in private practice
  • More aware of their own developmental values, strengths, accomplishments and needs
  • Competent at the  ACC (Associate Certified Coach) level for all core competencies of coaching as outlined by the ICF
