Humane Leadership Major

Are you extremely dedicated to your work with animals but lack the academic credentials that can allow you to advance your career in the field?

Do you want to enhance the overall level of professionalism and efficiency in your shelter?

This program is designed specifically for individuals working in, or who want to work in, animal care and protection. It provides specific knowledge that will support career goals in animal advocacy and shelter management.  Studentsinclude animal control officers, humane educators, shelter managers, veterinary technicians and animal care volunteers.

The program combines a foundation in nonprofit management with a grounding in the history, philosophies, and issues related to animals. It provides targeted, specific knowledge that will support career goals in shelter management, animal control, or animal advocacy.  Through the humane leadership major courses students will learn to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of the principles, strategies, and resources related to humane leadership
  • develop programs to educate, assist, and advocate for animals
  • manage the fundraising and financial management aspects of shelters
  • deal with the human resource issues involving paid employees as well as volunteer staff
  • develop and implement effective community education and outreach initiatives
  • handle the psychological and emotional stress that results from the high level of care-giving demanded by animal shelter work

Already have your bachelor's degree? Earn a certificate in humane leadership...
