Books / Other Materials

The circulation period for books varies depending on whether the borrower is a student, faculty member, staff member, alumnus or not affiliated with Duquesne. Journals do not circulate.

Fines

The fine for overdue material is $.20 per day with increased fines for all special materials.

Fines for reserve material vary by the item's circulation period. Materials that are designated as 2 hours room use only are fined at the rate of $.50 per hour. Reserve materials that are permitted to circulate for one day, three days or one week are fined at the rate of $1.00 per day.The library reserves the right to recall books that are requested by other borrowers after 28 days. Recalled items must be returned within 7 days. Fines for recalled items are $1.00 per day.

Renewals

Students, faculty, and staff can renew books online by using DuCat. Click "My Account" and enter your 16 digit Duquesne ID number. You cannot renew books online if:

  • You have an overdue book.

  • You have unpaid Library fines.

  • The book has reached its renewal limit.

  • Another Duquesne researcher has requested the book.

Online renewals are not available to Duquesne University Alumni or non-Duquesne borrowers. However, most can renew books by telephone at (412) 396-6130 or in person at the Circulation Desk.

Requests

To request a book though DuCat, first search for the book you want. Click Request Title. The next prompt will require your 16 digit DU ID number to login. The next screen will list the title that is being requested. You can either click on Submit Request or Cancel. When you click Submit Request, the screen will tell you that the title being requested has been successfully submitted. Notification information is included with the request submission. To review your requests, return to "My Account."

To cancel a request, select the title and click the Cancel Request button. The Cancel Patron Request screen will appear with the options to Cancel or Don't Cancel the Request. If you cancel the request the Successful Request Submission screen will tell you that the request will be cancelled within 2 business days.

Recalls

If a book has been charged out for more than 28 days, a recall can be placed on the book. The borrower will be notified that it has been requested by another borrower and that the book must be returned within one week to avoid a fine. The current fine for recalled materials is $1.00 per day. The person requesting the book will be notified when it is returned.

Alumni

Alumni can apply for borrowing privileges by stopping at the circulation desk and filling out an alumni registration form. Once the form is completed, alumni status will be verified and the information will be put into the Library's borrower database. The verification process may take up to 24 hours during the business week. Alumni privileges apply for one year.

To check out materials, alumni must be registered and present a valid driver's license or passport. Alumni can check out books for 4 weeks (28 days) with one renewal permitted. Total item limit is 10.  Renewals may be made in person or over the phone at (412) 396-6130.

Non-Duquesne Borrowers

Gumberg Library does not loan books to the general public except through interlibrary loan. Gumberg Library maintains a number of agreements with other university, college, and hospital libraries to allow direct borrowing.

Summer Borrowing

Students

Students who are registered for summer classes or registered for fall will have summer borrowing privileges including remote access to library databases. This includes students who are preregistered.

Access for students not enrolled for Summer or Fall semesters end at the conclusion of the Spring semester. Students who are not enrolled may request summer privileges using the online form only.

Faculty

All full-time faculty and all faculty teaching during the summer will have summer borrowing privileges including remote access to library databases. Part-time and adjunct faculty may request privileges using the online form.
