The Internship Program
The primary objective of the Internship Program is to provide Duquesne University students with professional, entry-level work experience as a valuable element of their academic curriculum. Virtual internships may be eligible for internship credit however specific criteria must be met.
Qualified students may receive credit for their internships through the Internship Program administered by the Career Services Center.
Internships posted on DuqCareerLink meet the criteria for internship credit. Be sure that your profile is up-to-date in DuqCareerLink and that you check periodically for internship opportunities. Better yet, create a saved search to receive automatic emails when internships are posted. If you're having trouble with creating the saved search, please call Career Services at 412-396-6644 for assistance.
You may search for additional local internship opportunities through the Pittsburgh Technology Council web site. Internships.com offers internship postings from locations throughout the U.S. Students may also find internships on their own, such as through family and friends or alumni and professors.
The Next Steps
To receive credit for your internship:
- Verify that you meet the qualifications required by your school and print out the instructions and authorization form: Liberal Arts, Sciences, Undergraduate Business, Undergraduate Business Service Learning, or Graduate Business.
- Consult with your academic advisor to determine where the internship credits fit into your course plan and then complete the authorization form together;
- Secure a faculty sponsor in your major for your internship. The faculty sponsor will oversee your internship and determine the course work you must complete for a passing grade. This often consists of weekly or bi-weekly papers, monthly meetings, and a 5-10 page paper at the end of the semester. Review the syllabus for your school or program: Liberal Arts, Science, Forensic Science 450/460, Undergraduate Business, Undergraduate Business - Service Learning, Graduate Business.
- Return the completed authorization form and job description on company letterhead to the Career Services Center (Rockwell Hall, Commons Level). The job description may be emailed by the company to the Internship Coordinator (firstname.lastname@example.org).The internship coordinator will assess all information and contact you to review the Learning Contract and syllabus;
- Complete and obtain all required signatures on the Learning Contract and return to Career Services by the deadline date, the Friday of the 4th week of the semester. Deadline dates are posted on campus as well as on the Learning Contract.
You are required to complete two confidential evaluations, a mid-term self evaluation and a final evaluation of your internship, and return it to the internship coordinator prior to the end of the semester.
