    Writing a Chronological Resume

    Follow these easy instructions to help you write a strong résumé.

    Identifying Information

    • State your name and contact information. Make sure your email address is appropriate. Remember, everything on your résumé gives an employer an impression of you.

    Objective

    • This is optional and may be excluded for more important information.

    Education

    • If you are a recent graduate, start with your education section. State your degree, institution, city, state and date of graduation. Refrain from including high school in your education section. Don’t forget to mention what major you have.
    • Don’t forget your GPA if it’s over a 3.0, and related coursework if you wish.
    • Include study abroad participation if it applies.

    Experience

    • Can include paid, unpaid, intern, and/or volunteer positions.
    • May be in one section or 2 (Related Experience and Other Experience)
    • List Title, Organization, City, State and Dates of Employment.
    • You can use bullets to describe what you’ve done. Choose action verbs to lead off your phrases and be sure to use the proper verb tense.

    Leadership

    • Use if you hold or have held an office in a student organization or spearheaded a project.

      Skills can include:

      • Computer Skills
      • Language Skills
      • Writing or Public Speaking Skills
      • Special Equipment
      • Certifications

      Honors and Awards

      • Include dates where appropriate
      • Explanations may be needed for further clarification
      • May include: Scholarships, Dean’s List, Honorary Societies, Academic, Athletic, and Community Service Awards.

      Activities

      • Community Service
      • Clubs and Social Organizations
      • Professional Associations
      • Recreational Organizations

      References

      • Typically is not part of the résumé itself.
      • A separate sheet can be your “Reference List.”
      • “References Available Upon request” at the bottom of your résumé is optional.
      What not to include!
      • Irrelevant personal information
      • Gender, religion, date of birth
      • Salary expectations
      • Photograph
      • Reference list
      • Inaccurate information
