Postdoctoral Residency in University Counseling and Psychological Services


The  Duquesne University Counseling Center offers a full-time postdoctoral residency program. There are two 12-month positions offered each academic year.

Program Description

The purpose of the residency is to engage the resident in all aspects of University Counseling Center service, to prepare for independent work as a licensed psychologist and to be a highly competitive candidate for university counseling center positions. The core of the resident's training includes individual and group counseling with undergraduate and graduate students, on-call crisis services, individual supervision, and consultation / outreach.

After orientation residents begin to build a caseload of individual clients, most of whom are seen every other week, due to the high demand for University Counseling Center services. During the busiest times of the year residents may schedule an average of 15-22 individual therapy sessions per week. Over student breaks this drops to an average of less than 10 sessions per week. Two hours of individual supervision, a weekly staff meeting, and postdoc seminar are scheduled each week.

Duquesne University Counseling Center provides short-term therapy to undergraduate and graduate students. If interested, residents have the option of working long-term with several clients. As residents become more comfortable and familiar with the Center and the University, they are asked to take on more responsibilities. Paperwork and scheduling are completed with Titanium software. On-call duty is assigned on a rotating basis (an average of once every six weeks). Residents co-lead weekly group therapy with a doctoral student and provide supervision to that student. They also have the opportunity to run a therapy group and workshops independently. They participate in university functions as a representative of the Counseling Center.

Residents are formally evaluated on a quarterly basis. In the event of a grievance, due process is followed and grievance procedures are in place to facilitate a fair resolution.

The residency consists of 1800 hours of supervised professional psychological activities, and it meets the postdoctoral supervised experience requirements for licensure in Pennsylvania.

The Training Site

The Duquesne University Counseling Center has two locations on campus. The Main Office, which houses our support staff, three senior staff members, and our consulting psychiatrist, is located in the Administration Building. The Training Coordinator and two postdoctoral residents have offices located in the Student Union.  The University Counseling Center will be moving to a single location on campus in the Spring of 2014.

Each resident is provided a private office with a computer, Internet access, and videotaping capabilities. Residents have access to the UCC library of training materials, as well as the University library. To promote professional development, each resident receives a $500 professional development stipend, which they may use for expenses such as continuing education, conference registration, or licensing materials / fees. Additionally, Duquesne University's doctoral program in clinical psychology offers periodic seminars on campus.

SERVICE ACTIVITIES

Professional services in which residents can expect to further their expertise include:

Individual and Couples Psychotherapy. Individual therapy is the primary activity of residents at the center. Residents carry a caseload of 15-20 individual therapy clients per week. If interested, postdoctoral residents may also have the opportunity to provide couples therapy.

Group Psychotherapy and Supervision of Doctoral Students. Residents co-lead weekly group therapy with a clinical psychology doctoral student and provide supervision to that student. These psychotherapy process groups provide the opportunity for a diverse group of students to work together weekly for 8-12 weeks, generally on interpersonal or self-care goals. Residents receive weekly group supervision of their supervision. Residents also have the opportunity to run workshops or a therapy group independently.

Crisis intervention and Emergency Services. Crisis intervention at the UCC includes situations that arise during regular working hours as well as after-hours on-call services. On-call responsibilities are shared on a rotating basis among six (6) clinicians.  UCC staff work closely with the Office of Residence Life and the Campus Police in handling mental health emergencies.

Consultation and Outreach to University Community. The Counseling Center staff is consulted by offices and departments within the University for programming on mental health issues and provides consultation on student-related problems for faculty and staff. Residents participate in the planning and delivery of psycho-educational workshops for students, faculty, staff, and parents.  In addition to workshops, the Counseling Center sponsors outreach activities (such as National Depression Screening) and participates in University-wide outreach events.  The Counseling Center also offers one-session consultation and referral for faculty and staff who are experiencing difficulties.

University Counseling Administration. Residents will attend University functions and meetings and be assigned administrative duties on an ad hoc basis. Some of these duties may include participation on University committees, assisting in review and/or development of Counseling Center policies and procedures, and assisting with administrative reports.

THE TRAINING PROGRAM

The residency program provides ongoing, planned training experiences whose focus is assuring breadth and quality of training while delivering high quality counseling services for Duquesne University students.

The primary goals of the training program are:

Goal 1:   To provide an opportunity for the development and refinement of clinical skills to facilitate practice at an entry level for professional psychology positions

Goal 2:  To provide specialized training in the practice of psychology in the university setting, to include direct service to student populations, outreach and consultation to the campus community, and guided experiences with university administrative duties and functions

Goal 3: To foster an increased sense of ethical responsibility and professional identity

Goal 4: To encourage and foster a respect and appreciation for diversity

Goal 5:  To provide a training experience that serves to facilitate continued professional and personal growth

Goal 6:  To insure the quality and relevancy of the training program by on-going program evaluation.

Training for the resident is provided through the following activities:

Orientation: Training begins with two weeks of orientation to the Center. During this period, residents become acquainted with the staff, setting, UCC policies and procedures, and Titanium software.  Supervisors are selected, and personal supervision goals are identified.  Residents also receive training in managing on-call crises.

Individual supervision: Residents receive two (2) hours of individual supervision per week throughout the year.  There is generally the opportunity to work with two or three supervisors.  Videotape supervision is required, although it is acceptable for clients to opt not to be taped.

Case Conference: Serves as an opportunity for group supervision / consultation of clinical cases with the senior staff. Each resident will formally present a case once per month.

Resident Seminar: Varies week to week and includes discussion of readings, video and outside speakers. Licensing preparation may also be reviewed.

Group supervision:  This is provided while groups are running.  Residents meet with the group coordinator or another senior staff member to discuss how groups are progressing and how supervision of student therapists is proceeding.
